Frequently Asked Questions

Is my information confidential?

Yes, your information is confidential and cannot be released to anyone without your permission. Please refer to the Student Handbook portion of this Web site for further information.

Should I schedule an appointment to register for services with the SDRC?

If at all possible, call and schedule an appointment to meet with someone so you are guaranteed to meet with a counselor. All counselors may be busy and not available otherwise.

What should I bring when I register for services?

Most importantly, a copy of your most recent documentation. Please refer to the registering for services portion of the SDRC student handbook. Click on Registering for services for more information.

As a new student, when is the best time to register with the SDRC?

The first few weeks of classes are always a hectic time around the SDRC. If possible, it is best to meet with a representative of the SDRC during the weeks before classes or during your orientation.

What health professionals does the SDRC accept documentation from?

The SDRC accepts documentation from licensed physicians, psychologists, and psychiatrists based on disability. We DO NOT accept documentation from nurse practitioners, social workers, mental health counselors, or marriage and family therapists.

Why is an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan not accepted as documentation for a learning disability?

An IEP or 504 Plan is insufficient documentation but can be included as a supplement to a comprehensive assessment of tests. The SDRC is looking for a comprehensive assessment battery and the resulting diagnostic report, which must include a diagnostic interview, assessment of aptitude, measure of academic achievement and information processing.

Why am I asked if I want to register to vote when I sign up for services with the SDRC?

Because the Student Disability Resource Center serves students with disabilities, we are required to ask every student if they want to register to vote and assist them in that process.

Can I get accommodations for the standardized tests such as the CLAST and GRE?

Yes. For the CLAST exam, you need to request a letter from the SDRC and take it to the Testing and Evaluation Center currently located in the William Johnston Bldg. For the GRE and other exams consult the Educational Testing Services Web site at http://www.ets.org

Where can I be tested?

There are two places on the Florida State University campus where you can be tested for a learning disability. The Adult Learning Evaluation Center (850-644-3611) and Psychology Clinic (850-644-3006) each offer testing. You may also consult the yellow pages of the phone book for licensed psychiatrists and psychologists who conduct learning evaluation testing.
