The Eccleston-Callahan Memorial Fund was created in 1972 when the building and assets of the Eccleston-Callahan Memorial Hospital for Crippled Children were placed in trust to benefit needy handicapped children and youth. The Trust was transferred to the Community Foundation of Central Florida in 1996, and is now an endowed scholarship. The Fund is named in memory of Dr. C.L. Eccleston, a dentist, and Dr. J. B. Callahan, a physician, both of Orlando.

Dr. J. B. Callahan was the first black physician to practice and perform surgery in Orlando. Dr. Callahan died in 1947, having practiced medicine in Orlando for over 40 years. Callahan Elementary School (now the Callahan Neighborhood Center) was named in his honor.

A native of Jamaica, Dr. C. L. Eccleston, moved to Orlando in 1928, was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He died in September 1948 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
