Questions concerning the computer lab or suggestion for the purchase of additional adaptive equipment can be directed to Shanathan Crayton, Lab Coordinator, at scrayton@admin.fsu.edu
The following equipment/programs can be used in the lab:
CCTV (Close Circuit Television)
A computer monitor that enlarges or
magnifies written work up to 16 times.
Zoom Text
A computer program that magnifies up to 16 times and enlarges text; it also has speech enhancement for students that have low vision. This program is used in conjunction with a large screen monitor.
Spectrum Program
Allows typing on one screen and viewing the document on the same screen to be typed, but in a split format. It allows students to be able to read and type at the same time without having to take their eyes off the computer screen. This program is used in conjunction with a large screen monitor.
JAWS
This program is a computer screen reader that allows you to change voices on the computer to a voice that is more desirable.
Braille Embosser (Printer) and Duxberry
A machine that translates written material into Braille up to 40 characters across. The Duxberry Program translates Microsoft word or word perfect into Braille.
Laptop Computers
You can check out a laptop for one week at a time. Some of the computers are programmed with a speech synthesizer. *Note: Laptops must be returned to the Center by designated time or records will be tagged and/or the equipment will be reported stolen.
Reading Edge Machine
The Reading Edge machine can be used to read and record books on tape.
Kurzweil 3000

Read and Write Software Program
This program can assist with literacy, language,
and learning. The program also has segments that can help students with
visual and oral comprehension. The program includes:
A text reader window with speech feedback. Text can be read back by
word, sentence, or highlighted paragraph.
Thesaurus and word wizard that allows the user to find alternative suggestions
for words, an audible definition, and a sample sentence for every selected
word.
An advanced spellchecker with the ability solve the most complex patterns
of spelling errors. It also has a built-in vocabulary of 180,000 words
with UK, U.S., and Australian vocabulary as standard.
Homonym support that reduces confusion of similar sounding words with
different meanings by giving an audible definition and color-coding.
word prediction panel that displays a choice of up to twelve words.
This feature helps construct new sentences and learns new words as you
type.
Productivity tools such as auto correction to correct commonly made
mistakes and abbreviation expansions to save time while typing.
Four-Track Tape Recorders and Franklin Spellers
Four-track tape recorders and hand-held Franklin
Spellers are available for check-out for one semester at a time. Failure
to return checked-out equipment will result in an administrative hold
being placed on University records and/or the equipment being reported
stolen to FSU Police.
